Under normal condition it operates as ELR seat belt.

It contains an electronically controlled retractor called pretensioner

In the event of crash
- Pretensioner will tighten the belt almost instantaneously to restrict movement ( sensors will trigger explosively expanding gas in the pretentioner unit which in turn retracts the belt )
- Occupant prevented from moving forward and hitting the steering wheel or instrument panel
